    Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China.  We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.


    Our North American Innovation Center is seeking to add a talented R&D Welding and Joining Engineer to its team. The purpose of this role is to lead aluminum joining development projects with our automotive customers prior to or in the early development phase of new car models. This individual will pursue the development of novel aluminum joining methods and support vehicle launch activities as required for new joining technology. They will have a key role as a global expert in automotive aluminum joining within the extended network of Aleris Global R&D; partnering with universities, suppliers and labs.

    Responsibilities Include

    • Initiate and lead strategic aluminum joining projects with automotive OEM customers and Tier 1 suppliers with the participation of Aleris at the earliest possible stage.
    • Detect technological developments at customers which influence or change the requirements of Aleris material qualities.
    • Be a technical expert in key aluminum joining methods: self-piercing rivets, resistance spot welding, laser, and MIG welding. Provide support as a team member on key projects and also lead for technical innovation projects in aluminum joining.
    • Partner with leading universities, government agencies and laboratories to support applied research in automotive aluminum joining.
    • Manage R&D projects for timing, resources, budget. Present at both technical and executive reviews.
    • Lead development of Aleris North American internal lab testing capabilities for aluminum joining.
    • Support welding and joining material qualifications at automotive OEMs.
    • Provide input for R&D Strategy and R&D Year plan.

    Required Qualifications

    • B.S. Engineering (Welding, Materials, Metallurgical, Mechanical).
    • Welding experience with automotive type joining methods (i.e. resistance spot welding).
    • Experience with material/weld lab characterization (mechanical, microstructural).
    • Project management skills (i.e. office, presentations, success leading technical projects).

    Preferred Qualifications

    • M.S./Phd. In Engineering (Welding, Materials, Metallurgical, Mechanical).
    • Extensive experience with aluminum joining technology and methods. Possess an understanding of automotive applications.
    • Demonstrated development of novel approaches to the aluminum joining field through R&D/publications.
    • Ability to lead lab activities relating to material and weld characterization, mechanical, microstructural, corrosion etc. With the ability to understand and interpret complex testing data pertaining to R&D projects and failure characterization.
    • Experience with numerical simulation codes.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
