    Our team is seeking to add a Mechanical Engineer to its team in Richmond, VA. Under the direction of the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer will plan, lead, organize and control all activities of the mechanical engineering function which includes design, selection, installation, development, and automation of equipment and processes to assure the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

    Responsibilities Include


    • Leverage the Aleris Safety System and Safety Principles to create a zero injury culture. Follow all plant HSE policies, standards and procedures.
    • Utilize the principle of continuous quality and reliability improvement on a routine basis.
    • Identify areas of potential improvement in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased throughput, improved quality, increased equipment uptime and market penetration.
    • Work closely with the Engineering/Maintenance Manager, develop conceptual and functional requirements for short and long term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan.
    • Compare alternatives and recommend to the Engineering/Maintenance Manager cost effective solutions for productivity, cost, quality, reliability, safety and environment improvements.
    • Develop cost estimates and schedules for Site capital projects.
    • Analyze projected financial impact of proposed process, equipment and facilities modifications.
    • Prepare and presents robust capital expenditure requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval.
    • Manage the full scope of mechanical maintenance projects including cost control, schedule, and compliance with safety and environmental requirements, to assure performance against expectations.
    • Develop, coordinate and manage external resources including contractors, vendors and engineering.
    • Provide functional and technical direction to plant maintenance and operating salary and hourly staffs.
    • Participate as a member and/or leader in process development, continuous improvement and other problem-solving work teams as requested by Management.
    • Support Site as requested in a staff role by attending meetings and providing counsel.
    • Communicate both verbally and in writing to Site and group management to keep management informed of activities, potential issues and opportunities.
    • Develop personal training plan for professional and technical growth to stay current with state-of-the-art equipment and process development.
    • Functionally direct, lead and supervise maintenance technicians as necessary - to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staffs.
    • Provide technical consultation service to managerial staff.
    • Assist the Engineering/Maintenance Manager in developing the technical and process skills of the hourly maintenance crews.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and other technical resources outside of the Site and Company.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
    • 1-3 years of progressive responsibility in a manufacturing environment.
    • A strong understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability.
    • Ability to function on a team as a member and as a team leader.
    • Sufficient interpersonal and both written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact with contractors, customers, employees, and government regulatory agencies at all levels.
