  • Overview / Job Summary

    Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China.  We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

     

    The Davenport manufacturing facility is located just west of downtown Davenport, Iowa. Davenport is known as an environmentally-friendly aluminum sheet producer because it utilizes specialized blending, melting and continuous casting processes to produce high-quality aluminum sheet from predominantly recycled materials at the Casting Plant. Davenport alloys have some of the highest recycled content in the industry. The Finishing Mill in Davenport cold rolls aluminum to a desired gauge, anneals to temper, levels, coats and slits the rolled sheet to size.

     

    Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the role leads and directs the production activities for the production department for the location across all shifts.  This role will have direct accountability in meeting all department metrics related to Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost. 

    Responsibilities Include

    • Actively participate in maintaining a zero incident safety culture.
    • Live and champion the Aleris core values; Safety, Integrity, Customer Focus, Ownership, Excellence, and Teamwork.
    • Implements and maintains the safety program in the production departments of the location. Maintains a constant vigilance for safe and healthy working conditions of employees.  This includes responsibility for maintaining a high standard for housekeeping practices.  Makes employees aware of job hazards directly and through subordinate supervisors and hourly leaders.  Ensures proper safety training of employees and compliance with company safety rules and procedures. 
    • Leads and directs the production activities for the production departments for the location across all shifts. Clarifies and coordinates tasks and provides individual coaching and support needed to keep team committed to achievement of defined goals.  Assumes an important role in resolving production problems.
    • Supervises up to 6 Production Supervisors, Leaders and production personnel (approximately 75+) to ensure maximum production and quality levels for all plant equipment and operations in accordance with production plan.
    • Achieves production plan, operating within costs as budgeted for stated production levels in the fiscal year. Controls recovery of materials and other direct and indirect costs.
    • Develops and maintains a smooth functioning communications system with departments and other personnel. Ensures good communications among and between shifts and crews.
    • Investigates accidents to determine and eliminate the cause.  Works closely with location EHS.
    • Conducts all supervisory responsibilities concerning the hiring, training, counseling, discipline, and performance appraisal, Assigns and prioritizes work for all subordinates. Coaches and supports team and please a key role in promoting team culture.
    • Recommends replacement of existing equipment as needed and follows up on action performance against estimates. Accumulates costs and statistical data on major repairs and assists in long range planning.
    • Partners with the Human Resources to ensure compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement in areas such as overtime and seniority and works to resolve employee grievances in a timely and equitable manner.
    • Partners with the Continuous Improvement Manager and is a facilitator for  Continuous Improvement  implementation.
    • Works closely with Quality Manager to establish a consistent process for the application of quality improvement.
    • Works closely with the Maintenance and Engineering Manager to ensure all reliability initiatives and maintenance programs are met.

    Required Qualifications

    • Four-year degree in Engineering, or other technical related field and 5+ years of managerial experience in an industrial environment, or extensive applicable experience in lieu of degree.
    • 5-10 years manufacturing experience, including leadership of production teams with knowledge of plant operations and processes
    • Prior manufacturing experience with knowledge of plant operations and processes.
    • Strong interpersonal skills - oral and written communication skills are essential.
    • Strong problem solving skills.
    • Demonstrated process improvement using lean concepts.

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Aluminum and/or metals experience
    • Lean belt or six sigma certification
    • Experience working in a Union environment
