  • Overview / Job Summary

    Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

     

    Our Innovation Center-North America is seeking to add a talented, experienced Tribology Specialist to its Process, Product and Technology Team. The purpose of this role is the responsibility for overseeing the formulation and control of Hot Mill emulsion and Cold Mill lubricant fluids at the Aleris Lewisport Rolling Mill in order to consistently produce industry leading automotive products.

    Responsibilities Include

    • Ensure the Hot Mill emulsion and Cold Mill lubricant formulations are correct to deliver automotive products with required surface quality.

    • Lead the implementation of control and response plans to ensure rolling fluid compositions and levels remain stable and capable.

    • Recommend rolling fluid formulation changes to respond to changes in Rolling Processes or conditions in the mills.

    • Review and discuss rolling fluid composition and level trends with Operations and Maintenance personnel, including Lewisport Management Team.

    • Investigate potential contribution of rolling fluids quality to internal plant product rejections as well as Customer claims and issues affecting downstream processing.

    • Collaborate with Laboratory Supervisor to develop Laboratory tests and testing plans to support process control.

    • Collaborate with Innovation Center-North America R&D as required to assess emulsion and lubricant formulation changes necessary to support new products as well as changes in Customers’ processes.

    • Participate in global Best Practice monitoring and knowledge transfer among Aleris rolling mills.

    • Assist the CALP line team in developing test methods and/or carrying tests to improve the operation of the chemical section.

    • Comply with all safety standards, regulations and policies

    • Participate in Plant Safety Observation Program

    Required Qualifications

    • 4-year degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry
    • Understanding of how Hot Mill emulsions and Cold Mill lubricants interact with the rolling process and affect the final product of each process.
    • Strong commitment to Safety
    • Knowledge of standard industry emulsion and lubricant formulations.
    • Knowledge of industry standard testing of emulsions and lubricants.
    • Knowledge of SPC and process control.
    • Knowledge of metals rolling physics and chemistry.
    • Excellent communications skills from Floor Level to Board Room.
    • Excellent computer skills including statistical software package and full complement of Office products.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 3-5 years tribology experience in metals rolling mill preferred
