Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We are seeking to add a talented Mechanical Engineer to our Maintenance & Engineering department at our facility located in Clayton, NJ.

• Ensures all technical and engineering activities comply with Aleris HSE standards and policies, all state and federal regulations, and company policies and procedures.

• Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
• Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components.
• Troubleshoots, inspects, modifies, and assists in installation of equipment for optimizing productivity and quality while remaining in compliance with all Aleris and regulatory health, safety and environmental standards.
• Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
• Analyzes severity and prioritizes equipment issues to minimize plant downtime as well as maximize plant productivity.
• Modifies or develops work instructions per the ISO 9001:2015 quality system guidelines to keep current with actual practice within the plant operations and works within the parameters created by the ISO9001:2015 quality system.
• Provide quality and timely engineering technical support, communication and advice to Maintenance & Engineering Manager and operating personnel concerning the design, maintenance of equipment, and procurement of critical spare parts, in conjunction with assigned projects or as a part of process improvement tasks.
• Utilizes the principle of continuous quality improvement on a routine basis, supporting and participating in a continuous improvement initiatives.
• Identifies areas of potential improvement in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased throughput, improved quality, and market penetration.
• Provides engineering support to maintenance and production areas as required.
• Investigates material substitutions for equipment and process improvements. Ensures that safety and safe work practices remain the number one priority at all times.
• Assists employees in operating basics of process equipment and diagnosing malfunctions in equipment and work processes to establish best practices.
• Monitors and keeps production running by machining, building, and repairing equipment parts. Is technically competent and capable of backfilling team members.

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or degree in related engineering field.
• Knowledge of SPC principles, tools, and techniques. 
• Strong decision making and problem solving skills including the ability to solve problems while exhibiting practical judgment and realistic understanding of the issues involved. 

• Must have the ability and confidence to make decisions relating to role's accountabilities.

• Ability to function on a team as a member and as a team leader.
• Sufficient interpersonal and both written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact with contractors, customers, employees, and government regulatory agencies at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1 – 3 years of progressive responsibility in a manufacturing environment, abreast of present aluminum processing technology. 

• 1 – 3 years of experience in aluminum (or similar industry) processing systems.
