Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.


Our team is seeking to add an Electrical Engineer to its team in Richmond, VA. Under the direction of the Engineering & Maintenance Manager, the Electrical Engineer will plan, lead, organize and control activities of the Controls, Automation, and Electrical function which include design, selection, installation, development, and automation of equipment and processes to assure the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Responsibilities Include

•Leverage the Aleris Safety System and Safety Principles to create a zero injury culture.
•Utilize the principle of continuous quality and reliability improvement on a routine basis.
•Identify areas of potential improvement in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased throughput, improved quality, increased equipment uptime and market penetration.
•Work closely with the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, develop conceptual and functional requirements for short and long term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan. 
•Assist in troubleshooting and addressing Site automation/control issues which impede the achievement of Site goals related to safety, quality, productivity, reliability and cost.  Review related manuals, blueprints & schematic diagrams to determine specific tasks to be performed.
•Review Site equipment and technology for robustness, reliability and obsolescence.  Where necessary, develop plans for modifications and/or upgrades.
•Compare alternatives and recommend to the Engineering/Maintenance Manager cost effective solutions for productivity, cost, quality, reliability, safety and environment improvements.
•Develop cost estimates and schedules for Site capital projects.
•Analyze projected financial impact of proposed process, equipment and facilities modifications.
•Prepare and present robust capital expenditure requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval.
•Manage the full scope of Automation-Controls projects including cost control, schedule, and compliance with safety and environmental requirements, to assure performance against expectations.
•Develop, coordinate and manage external resources including contractors, vendors and engineering.
•Provide functional and technical direction to plant maintenance and operating salary and hourly staffs.
•Participate as a member and/or leader in process development, continuous improvement and other problem-solving work teams as requested by Management.
•Support Site as requested in a staff role by attending meetings and providing counsel.
•Communicate both verbally and in writing to Site and group management to keep management informed of activities, potential issues and opportunities. 
•Develop personal training plan for professional and technical growth to stay current with state-of-the-art equipment and process development. 
•Functionally direct, lead and supervise maintenance technicians as necessary - to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staffs.
•Provide technical consultation service to managerial staff.
•Assist the Maintenance & Engineering Manager in developing the technical and process skills of the hourly maintenance crews.
•Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and other technical resources outside of the Site and Company.
•Prepare and/or modify electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, graphs
•Manage the plant’s power distribution predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance programs

Required Qualifications

•BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering technology, Automated or Application Engineering.
•Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organization skills
•Demonstrated experience in industrial electrical and/or controls maintenance.
•5+ years of applicable experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
•1 – 3 years of experience in aluminum (or similar industry) processing systems preferred.
•Proficiency at Ladder Logic programming, I/O management, and troubleshooting preferred.
•Familiarity with Wonderware plant networking system preferred

•Working working knowledge of PLC systems, hydraulics, pneumatics and overall machine design.
•Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems.
•An understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability. Good methodical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment and related issues.
