Overview / Job Summary

Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

The purpose of this role is to provide support to the Regional HR Manager for all HR activities at both Uhrichsville, OH. and Buckhannon, WV. facilities including but not limited to employee/labor relations, benefits administration and all other local Human Resources functions. This HR professional will also assist in the recruiting and training efforts in addition to providing advice, assistance and follow-up on company policies, procedures, and documentation, and coordinate the resolution of specific policy-related and procedural problems and inquiries. In addition, this role will be a champion for creating a safe, inclusive and highly productive culture.

Responsibilities Include

  1. Be a champion for plant safety and performance by understanding how the HR role can partner with employees and management to improve safety performance and drive a high performing safety culture.
  2. Responsible for all HR administration for Uhrichsville and Buckhannon facilities including:
  3. Timely and effective entry of payroll information for both hourly and salaried employees,
    • processing time and attendance records
    • file management,
    • unemployment claim inquiries,
    • maintain HR Oracle system transactions and data integrity.
  4. Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies and processes for hourly bargaining unit and non-exempt staff recruitment. Ensure all recruitment compliance activities are followed and appropriately documented (postings, job files, pre-employment screenings, EEO/AAP annual filing, data tracking, etc.)
  5. Administer and explain benefits to employees, by serving as a liaison between employees and insurance carriers as needed.
  6. Work with Regional HR Manager, department managers, supervisors and employees to resolve employee relations issues and provide advice, assistance and follow-up on company policies, procedures, and documentation. Ensure thorough analysis of issues, documentation of facts, and then formulate sound and compliant recommendations. Exercise appropriate judgment to engage corporate and regional resources when needed.
  7. Assist Regional HR Manager in the administration of the collective bargaining agreement, grievance meetings, preparation for arbitrations and negotiations as needed.
  8. Review and make recommendations to the Regional Human Resource Manager for any improvements to HR policies, procedures and practices. Communicate appropriate changes to all employees and ensure compliance.
  9. Compile and analyze statistical reports concerning recruitment and EEO, compensation, headcount, scorecard, success planning, and turnover data and advise Regional Human Resources Manager of areas of concern.
  10. Conduct training in HR and employment-related subjects.
  11. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  12. Support the AOS organization in the development of programs/tools/techniques and communication across the Aleris organization.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:         

An associate’s degree in Business or HR Management with three (3) to five (5) years of Human Resources experience in a manufacturing environment, OR A bachelor’s degree in business with a focus in Human Resources Management and at least two (2) years of experience as an HR professional in a manufacturing environment. 

Required Skills:

Must be proficient in Microsoft Business Applications software. Previous HRIS and payroll system administration. Excellent written, verbal, listening and interpersonal skills. Must have ability to learn quickly and work in fast-paced environment. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Up to 20% travel to other plants within region required. Must have the ability to occasionally extend stay at a particular site.

Preferred Skills:

Professional in Human Resources (PHR).  Experience working as an HR professional in a Union environment.  Working knowledge of State and Federal pay administration laws, employee benefits administration, employee/industrial relations, FMLA compliance, Oracle HRIS, Kronos, Ultipro, and iCIMS. 

Decision Making:

Must have the ability and confidence to make decisions relating to role’s accountabilities. Must exercise discretion when determining if direction from manager is needed. Is accountable for the outcomes of decisions made.

Analytical Thinking:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to recognize data needed in order to make decisions, collect that data, and analyze in order to determine direction in which to proceed. If issue is beyond authority level or scope of work, must recommend plan of action to manager in order to proceed.
