Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

 

Our Rolled Products North America (RPNA) division is looking for an experienced Sr. Automation Specialist at our Lewisport, KY facility. The position will require the incumbent to work in a manufacturing environment which can be hot, dusty and may require climbing on or around equipment to supervise repairs. Incumbent must handle multiple projects and priorities and be willing to work overtime as necessary to meet demanding and difficult emergency situations. The successful candidate will establish strong relationships with all organizational levels in order to build collaborative approaches toward Engineering management.

Responsibilities Include

  • The Sr. Automation Specialist is responsible for and instrumental in identifying new manufacturing technology.
  • Responsible for working with vendors and design teams, follow through the build phase, and implementation of this equipment in production.
  • Will evaluate automated equipment & processes & solve automated equipment & employee training issues. Review related manuals, blueprints, & schematic diagrams to determine tasks to be performed.
  • Provide leadership and direction for all areas of production; including manpower management, determining productivity benchmarks, monitoring work center performance and developing efficiency opportunities.
  • Drive employee engagement and participation in the Company's continuous improvement programs by promoting teamwork and open and honest communications.
  • Interact with vendors, customers, contractors and employees at all levels of the organization; able to make decisions "under fire".
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Analyze and diagnose root causes of problems and failures recommending and providing solutions to maximize uptime.
  • Identify potential problems or opportunities related to the proper and cost effective operation and maintenance of processes to reduce costs and increase throughput.

Required Qualifications

  • Have hands-on programming and commissioning experience.
  • Capable to understand and modify L1 Software on the automation platforms in use at Aleris (Siemens S7, Rockwell, servo systems).
  • Have cross-domain understanding of complete machine (Automation, Electrics, Hydraulics, Mechanical systems, pneumatics, sensors, actuator) and be able to identify problems in non-automation domains.
  • Have experience with the different automation layers (L1, L2, L3/MES) and communication protocol between them.
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical and electrical industrial maintenance.
  • 8 to 10 years of applicable experience in Siemens S7 System Automation and troubleshooting.
  • 10+ years of rolling experience. (Hot Mill preferred, but Cold Mill acceptable)
  • Experienced in trouble shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics, hydraulics, and force measurement feedback systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of purchasing, PLC systems, hydraulics, pneumatics and overall machine design.
  • Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, analytical skills, good PC skills, and project management skills.
  • Must work well in a team environment and possess good leadership skills.
  • Must be PC literate in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Good mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • Experience working in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Good methodical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment and related issues.
  • Prepare and/or modify electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, and graphs.
  • Provide technical training to all applicable personnel regarding electrical systems and functions.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Some travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automated or Application Engineering.
