Overview / Job Summary

Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

 

Our Rolled Products North America (RPNA) division is seeking an Environmental Engineer at our facility located in Lewisport, KY. This position provides direct staff support to Aleris; articulates regulatory impact on operations to upper management; investigates, and recognizes and recommends corrective actions on environmental compliance issues and continuous improvement actions.

Responsibilities Include

  • Comply with all safety standards and regulations.
    Support the environmental function and activities and has site-wide environmental control plan input.
  • Maintain air program compliance including Title V permitting and NESHAPS regulations. Knowledge of subparts RRR and SSSS a plus.
  • Management of water treatment systems and controls, storm water management, spill control plans and waste management and reduction techniques.
  • Site lead for community right-to-know reporting including the TRI program.
  • Maintain certifications of environmental management systems such as ISO 14001.
  • Work collaboratively with corporate, regional and plant operational staff. Recommend, develop and implements policies, procedures and systems that meet/surpass the standards set by relevant legislation and regulation.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and proposed federal, state, and local environmental reports to help prepare, revise and implement required permits, licenses, orders and decrees.
  • Manage the collection and evaluation of analytical data and other environmental information to assess site compliance. Maintain and store environmental data, records and documents in a confidential manner. Provide summary analysis as required by legal and corporation requirements.
  • Collect and maintain accurate records as required by federal, state and local regulatory authorities. Report any noncompliance or malfunction issues in a timely manner to facility and corporate management.  Participate in any federal, state and local environmental-related inspections. 
  • Communicate with and maintain professional relationships with environmental agency personnel. Work with regional and corporate HSE team to negotiate any compliance issues and enforcement actions as well as provide required reports.
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for on-site environmental emergency response situations or for incidents that occur during the off-site shipment of material.
  • Audit environmental processes and programs for the facility. Participate on the corporate audit team assessing other Aleris sites for HSE compliance.
  • Develop and present training programs that support good environmental practices and ensure compliance with State and Federal agency regulations.
  • Attend the training programs necessary to fulfill the role responsibilities. 

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a science or HSE field (preferably Environmental Science) with a minimum of 2 years of related environmental experience is preferred.  Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Must have the ability to contribute and participate in a team environment.  Ability to accomplish assigned tasks, provide feedback, construct plans, and demonstrates confidence in team leader and member roles. Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work of the role.
  • The ability to recognize and analyze critical issues, identify and assign resources and follow-up to task completion.
  • Able to apply sampling and analysis protocol to provide accurate data and to explain and train others in sampling protocol.
