Overview / Job Summary

Aleris is a privately-held, global leader in aluminum rolled. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the company operates 14 facilities in North America, Europe and Asia.

 

Our Health, Safety and Environmental function is seeking an Environmental Remediation Manager to direct and manage all global remedial activities at closed/open and non-owned Aleris locations. This role will be based in Lewisport, KY. This position provides direct support to Closed, Operating and other non-owned sites; articulates regulatory impact on operations to upper management; investigates, recognizes and recommends corrective actions on remedial activities and continuous improvement actions while functioning in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner.

Responsibilities Include

  • Actively participate in maintaining a zero incident safety culture.

  • Responsible for providing global support for all remedial projects and activities at both Closed (off-site) and Operating (on-site) locations, including project work, property management and contractor management.
  • Select, manage and oversee consulting firms, contractors and employees performing work at sites.
  • Work with various regulatory agencies to achieve closure and post closure care requirements in a professional and cost-effective manner.
  • Articulate regulatory impact on facilities within scope of responsibility.
  • Direct emergency response activities at select owned, closed operations or properties and 3rd party sites.
  • Support sites within scope in any state/federal inspections by developing informal/formal responses, consult on engineering designs, direct/indirect communication with legal counsel and direct/indirect communication with any agencies.
  • Write and submit various reports in an accurate and timely manner to state and/or federal agencies as required for both operating and closed sites.
  • Develop annual budget related to environmental expenditures within scope, including monitoring of costs incurred. Research and recommend processes and products to minimize operating and capital expenditures. Write and generate requisitions. Receive against invoices.
  • Maintain and organize historical information.
  • Development of company reports for the environmental projects remediation costs and asset retirement costs based on environmental requirements.
  • Participate in company auditing programs and manage the waste vendor program. Conducting vendor audits as required.
  • Complete required regulatory training and maintain licenses as required (including Haz-Waste, RCRA, DOT, and the landfill manager’s license).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science and/or technology field (preferably Environmental Science).
  • 10+ years of related environmental experience.
  • Experience with both contractor and remediation project management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to obtain necessary licenses as required under site permits ((Included 40 hour RCRA certification, DOT, landfill manager’s license).
  • Ability to recognize and analyze critical issues, identify and assign resources and follow-up to task completion.
  • Strong ability to work independently with highest level of efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Able to apply sampling and analysis protocol to provide accurate data and to explain and train others in sampling protocol.
  • Ability to work with all levels of participants in a sensitive and confidential manner.
  • Flexibility of work hours.
  • Travel up to 30%, including some international travel as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the metals industry

 

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds. Must frequently perform office-related duties that may require any or all of the following: keyboarding, bending, standing, moving, talking, lifting, and driving a cart or truck. Must frequently travel, including the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner. Must be able to climb and work safely at heights of at least 60 feet. Speech and hearing required, close, distance and color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus required. Must be able to perform tasks in safety gear as required. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be capable of performing environmental testing including sampling.
