Overview / Job Summary

Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

 

Our North America (NA) division is seeking to add a talented Quality Technical Advisor in our Hot Mill department. The purpose of this role is to provide advice and support to departmental staff in solving production, inspection and quality processes within the policies and guidelines established by Aleris and government regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities Include

  • Work in a safe and cooperative manner within the Company policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the development of appropriate standards and measurements for key input and output variables consistent with quality and production requirements.
  • Monitor sample taking frequency and inspection process.
  • Conduct quality checks of the process and for adherence to standards.
  • Help improve current quality procedures and develop new procedures to improve quality and reduce scrap material.
  • Attend/participate in the daily MRB Quality meeting in the disposition of material.
  • Assist with the development and on-going revisions to Job Instructions and Layered Process Audits. Participate in any assigned Layered Process Audits.
  • Participate in process capability auditing at all levels of the organization. Make recommendations and drive to implementing sustainable solutions.
  • Assist the PPT and PT Team in organizing, running and administrating process trials including the taking of sampling for both internal and external trial material.
  • Participate as a team member to assist in the development and rollout of the Aleris Process Control (APC) system in the HM.
  • Work with the department AOS specialist to conduct root cause analysis on quality issues including facilitation of advanced problem solving techniques such as 5-Why, Fishbone Diagrams, A3’s and Cause Map.
  • Participate in Kaizen events to improve safety, quality and production.
  • Identify possible or known quality defects and initiate immediate containment of material including entry into the plant Corrective Action system per ISO/TS requirements.
  • Conduct the initial investigation and fact gathering required to complete a root cause analysis.

  • Work with the operations group to determine the impact of inline defects to the order.

  • Advise area management in the implementation of process control standards and measurements.

  • Coach, lead and train the work force on quality expectations and standards and to identify corrective actions of quality defects and causes of defects.

  • Demonstrate effective team facilitation skills to engage cross-functional teams to deliver improvement results on time.

  • Monitor, report and make recommendations for improvement on HM and plant quality issues.

  • Attend/participate in the departmental daily report out meetings if requested.

  • Participate in the development of a short and long-term quality plan for the HM department that supports the Business Unit’s strategic plan.

  • Help identify and develop 90-day action plans as needed that are relevant to the HM department.

  • Work as cross functional team member to make the HM department successful in providing a high quality product on time in full and safely.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering or Quality preferred.
  • At least 5 years of practical experience in line operations required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven technical competence.
  • Background in safety leadership, problem solving, process analysis, control plant methodology, continuous improvement methodology and project management preferred.
  • This position is on a rotating shift (4 day rotation, 2 days and 2 nights).
