Overview / Job Summary

Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

 

Our North American division is seeking to add a talented Production Manager – Hot Mill to its Leadership team. The purpose of this role is to manage and direct the execution of plans for the Hot Mill operations, which includes Hot Mill, Scalping and Homogenization. This position is responsible for maximizing productivity, quality and safety to achieve both short-term and long-term objectives; leading the team to drive a continuous improvement culture by utilizing the Aleris Operating System (AOS) to eliminate waste, overburden and variability in manufacturing processes; act as a role model for safety by driving and demonstrating behaviors that align with the Aleris safety principles and hold the team accountable for results; and provides leadership, direction, coaching and development to motivate and sustain high levels of employee performance.

Responsibilities Include

  • Assist with the development of safety, health and environmental (HSE) strategies using both internal and industry historical data to establish an HSE Roadmap.
  • Lead the department’s HSE efforts and ensure policies are adhered to and goals and objectives are met.
  • Provide effective leadership to encourage employee involvement in meeting all Hot Mill goals.
  • Implement and monitor safety programs and performance.
  • Establish departmental KPIs and ensure proper resources are available to meet targets.
  • Control and improve critical Hot Mill department processes to achieve specified recovery, quality and output objectives in order to achieve KPIs laid out in the Hot Mill Department Roadmap.
  • Control and reduce Hot Mill costs.
  • Develop a skilled team through training, performance measurement, and feedback.
  • Study and standardize procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates.
  • Develop and initiate yearly Hot Mill department operations plan, including capital projects and long-term strategic initiatives. 
  • Prepare monthly report on operations and cost.
  • Ensure the Collective Bargaining Agreement is adhered to.
  • Provide input to production planning groups as required.
  • Provide direction and assist with the prioritization of maintenance activities to achieve KPIs.
  • Collaborate with other departments (PPT, Product Technology, etc.) to ensure that we are meeting customer requirements.
  • Provide effective communication link with all individuals and work groups across the business unit.
  • Comply with all Aleris policies and regulatory statues.
  • Perform layered process audits to ensure established critical to quality inputs are adhered to.

Required Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or technical related field required.
  • 10+ years of managerial experience in an industrial environment required.
  • 5+ years of experience with quality systems and customer specific requirements. 
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement principles experience required. 
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills required, advanced skills beneficial. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lean/Six Sigma certification is preferred.
  • Experience working in a Union environment preferred.
  • Experience supplying Tier 1 / Tier 2 automotive product preferred.
