Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.

 

Our Rolled Products North America division is seeking to add a talented HSE Superintendent to its Environment Health & Safety team at our Lewisport, KY facility. This position will help lead plant health, Safety and Environmental performance and activities. This role is responsible for developing and implementing HSE programs that focus on system, process and cultural changes that drive company performance to higher levels and ensure compliance with internal and external requirements.

Responsibilities Include

 

  • Directs the resources and activities of the facility HSE Supervisors to support departments HSE programs by providing advice and guidance to all direct reports.
  • Ensures the health and safety of all employees, visitors and contractors through the adherence to HS&E standards, policies and procedures.
  • Partners with plant, regional and corporate resources to implement proactive solutions to avoid workplace injury and environmental upset conditions  and solve problems as they arise.
  • Interacts with and provides visible leadership to all employees, particularly those on the plant floor to drive health, safety and environmental awareness, engagement and improvement.
  • Improves HSE performance by continuously increasing a level of awareness and improving safety systems to eliminate accidents and injuries.
  • Provides environmental support in all areas, such as air , water and waste, working closely with the Environmental Manager on matters associated with permitting and compliance requirements. This could include preparation and submittal of RRR and NESHAP reports, etc.
  • Completes inspections and audits to detect and eliminate unsafe practices and potential environmental noncompliance conditions.
  • Leads or participates in monthly plant HSE meetings, inspections and assists department leaders with monthly crew HSE meetings.
  • Assesses equipment and processes for adequate mechanical and physical safeguards. Recommends improvements where needed.
  • Implements and delivers education and training programs for effective health, safety and environmental practices.
  • Follows investigation practices and procedures for all HSE incidents and near misses to determine the root causes and corrective actions necessary to prevent recurrences.  Meets corporate reporting  targets by timely completion of investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Collects and analyzes injury data to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Conducts effective workplace safety observations, and drives effectiveness of other’s observations.
  • Maintains accurate records and data as requires by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Maintains company records in a confidential manner.
  • Implements effective emergency response action programs.
  • Coordinates and assists with training such as CPR training and fire brigade training.
  • Assists with delivery of safety and environmental training.
  • Supports the site’s workers compensation administration, partnering with HR on return to work and disability management integration where applicable.
  • Quotes, purchases, and allocates necessary items to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Partners closely with facility HSE and Environmental Managers and provide support, feedback and recommend improvements & opportunities to improve overall facility performance. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, certified safety professional designation a plus.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in industrial safety, health or environmental role required, experience in the aluminum industry and in a unionized work environment preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, leadership skills and the ability to work with and motivate employees on all levels of the organization.
  • Effective project management and planning skills required.
  • Willingness to be on-call after regular work hours if issues arise.
